Mother's Day

3D printed gifts for Mom
you can print by Sunday

The quickest personalised Mother's Day gift on a 3D printer is a name plate: type "Mom" or the kids' names, choose a standing base and print it in about 45 minutes. Below are four ideas with print times, sizes and colours, plus the deadline that matters if you don't own a printer.

What to print for Mother's Day

Print something with a name on it that she'll keep on the desk, the kitchen shelf or her keys. A "Mom" plate in a script font, or one plate with every child's name, is personal in a way a shop gift isn't, and it takes one evening from idea to finished print.

You design it in the name generator in the browser. Designing and the 3D preview are free, with no account. When it looks right, you download the STL or 3MF for $4.99 (see pricing) and print it on any FDM printer. Script fonts are joined into one connected piece, so "Mama" in Pacifico prints as one part, not four letters.

Four gift ideas with print times

Typical times at 0.2 mm layer height on a Bambu Lab A1 mini or similar.

"Mom" or "Mama" name plate, about 45 minutes

A short word on the standing base, 10 to 12 cm wide. It stands on a desk or shelf. Pacifico or Dancing Script look warm, Playfair Display looks classic. See the desk name plate page for sizes.

The kids' names on one plate, 1 to 1.5 hours

Put "Mom" in row 1 and each child in the rows below, up to 5 rows in total. It's the gift from all siblings together. Drag the rows in the preview so they sit centred.

Keychain, about 20 minutes

"Mama" or her own name on the keychain base, 5 to 6 cm long and about 5 mm thick in total. The keychain size guide has the ring hole sizes that survive daily use.

Plant marker, about 30 minutes

Use the cake topper base with a prong and push it into a pot. "Mom's basil" or her name next to a new plant makes a gift for people who don't want more things on the shelf. Print it in PETG, which handles sun and wet soil better than PLA.

At about $20 per kilo, every gift here costs under $1 in filament. Final size is set by scaling in the slicer. The A1 mini bed is 18 cm, so the kids' plate fits.

Make the plate with all the kids' names

  1. 1

    Row 1: "Mom" or "Mama"

Or "Love you, Mom". Keep it short so it stays big. With the first letter scaled up to 1.5x, the M gets a nice hand-lettered look.

  2. 2

Rows 2 to 5: the children

One name per row. With four children, put two names in one row ("Liam & Ava") so the plate doesn't get too tall. All rows share one font.

  3. 3

    Pick the standing base

The plate carries every row, so the whole thing stands as one piece. If a row should float without plate, the row switch turns the base off for that row.

  4. 4

    Choose two colours

Export the 3MF. Letters and plate sit on separate filament slots, and Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer open it with two colours assigned. Without an AMS, pause at a layer and swap filament. White on dusty pink, or gold on black, both read well.

Timing: when to start

Mother's Day isn't on the same date everywhere. Check which one you need.

US, Canada, Australia, Germany, AustriaSunday, May 9the evening before if you own a printer
UK (Mothering Sunday)Sunday, March 7the evening before if you own a printer

Design the file tonight either way. Then you know it looks right, and the print is only a question of an hour.

What this can't do

The generator makes names and text. It has no hearts, flowers or photo frames, and you can't add a picture. For a heart shape you'd need a CAD tool like Tinkercad.

It also doesn't ship finished prints. No printer? Send the file to a print service or a friend with a printer. The options are in how to get custom 3D printed names, and the sample STL shows what the file looks like before you pay.

More ideas if she already has a name plate

  • A door sign for her home office or craft room, see the door name sign page.
  • A cake topper for Mother's Day brunch, "Best Mom" on a prong base.
  • A matching set: one keychain for each child with their own name, all in her favourite colour.
  • A grandma gift: "Oma", "Nana" or "Grandma" with the grandchildren's names in the rows below.
  • More by occasion and recipient in our 3D printed gift ideas.

Questions people ask

What can I 3D print for Mother's Day?

A standing name plate with "Mom" or "Mama", a plate with all the kids' names, a keychain or a plant marker for a pot. Each one takes 20 minutes to 1.5 hours to print and costs under $1 in filament.

Can I put all my kids' names on one gift?

Yes. The generator has up to 5 rows on one plate. Put "Mom" in the first row and a child in each row below. With more than four children, put two names in one row.

How long does a 3D printed Mother's Day gift take?

Designing takes a few minutes. A 10 cm Mom plate prints in about 45 minutes at 0.2 mm, a keychain in about 20 minutes. So you can design it the night before and have it ready in the morning.

Which font looks best for a Mom name plate?

Pacifico and Dancing Script look warm and handwritten, and the generator joins the letters into one piece. Playfair Display looks elegant if she prefers something classic. Check the preview at the final size before you download.

I don't have a 3D printer. Can I still make this?

Yes. Design and download the file, then send it to a print service or a friend with a printer. Plan 10 to 14 days before Mother's Day for production and shipping. NameSTL only makes the file, it doesn't ship prints.

What does it cost?

Designing is free. A single download costs $4.99 for personal use. If you want to make gifts for mom, grandma and aunts in one go, Unlimited at $9.99 a month covers every name.
