3D Name Plate Generator

What size should a name plate be?

Length is driven by the name, so set the height and let the width follow. These are the four sizes that cover almost every use, measured as letter height.

25–30 mm

Desk plate

Readable across a desk without dominating it. A 7-letter name lands around 150 mm wide.

40–50 mm

Reception counter

Read from two or three metres away. Expect 220–280 mm wide, which still fits a 256 mm bed diagonally.

20–25 mm

Door plate

Sits above or beside a handle. Keep the base slim so it does not stand proud of the frame.

15–20 mm

Shelf or locker

Small enough to print four or five at once on a single plate.

Slicer settings that work

A name plate is a short, wide part with a large first layer — the easiest kind of print there is. These settings are a safe starting point on any FDM printer.

Layer height

0.2 mm

Fine enough for clean letter edges. Drop to 0.12 mm only for script fonts with thin strokes.

Infill

15%

The part is mostly perimeter. More infill adds minutes and grams without adding strength.

Supports

None

Printed flat on its back, a name plate has no overhangs. Turn supports off and save the cleanup.

Print time

45–75 min

For a 150 mm desk plate at 5–6 mm thick. Roughly 10–15 g of filament, well under a dollar of PLA.

Print it flat, not upright

Lay the plate on its back so the letter faces point at the ceiling. You get the full bed for length, no supports, and the top surface takes the ironing pass cleanly. Printing it standing up looks tempting because it uses less bed space, but every letter then needs support and the front face ends up covered in layer lines.

Two-colour plates without a multi-material printer

Print the whole plate in the base colour, then insert a filament change in your slicer at the layer where the letters start rising off the base. One swap, two colours, no AMS or MMU. In PrusaSlicer and OrcaSlicer this is a colour change at a specific layer; in Bambu Studio it is a pause-and-swap.

Fonts that survive at small sizes

Block faces like Anton and Oswald hold their shape down to about 15 mm letter height. Script fonts such as Pacifico and Dancing Script have thin connecting strokes that get fragile below roughly 25 mm — if you want script on a small plate, add a millimetre or two of thickness so the strokes have some depth to hold onto.

Mounting it

The standing base is self-supporting on a flat desk. For a door or wall, drop the base, print the letters flat and use double-sided foam tape — it holds a PLA plate of this weight indefinitely and comes off without damaging paint. Screw holes are not built into the generator; if you need them, add them in your slicer's modifier tools or drill them after printing with a 3 mm bit at low speed.

Is the name plate generator free?

Designing and previewing is free with no account. You pay once when you download the STL, or take a subscription if you need more than a few.

What file do I get?

A single watertight STL containing the letters and the base as one solid. It opens directly in Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, Cura or any other slicer.

Can I put two lines on a plate — a name and a job title?

The generator produces one line of text per model. For a two-line plate, generate each line separately and arrange them on the build plate in your slicer, or print them as two parts and glue them to a backing.

How thick should the base be?

Between 4 and 6 mm for a desk plate. Under 3 mm a long plate can warp as it cools; over 8 mm you are just spending filament on something nobody sees.

Can I sell plates I make with this?

With a subscription, yes — commercial use is included. A single download is for personal use only.

Do I need a 3D printer?
