3D Printed Door Name Sign
For kids' rooms and office doors

Type a name and the generator puts an outline plate behind the letters, so the whole door sign is one piece with a flat back that takes tape, strips or screws. Preview it for free, download STL or a two-colour 3MF, and it prints in 30 to 90 minutes.

Starts on Pacifico with an outline plate. For an office door, switch to Poppins or Roboto and add a second row for the room or title.

How the door sign is built

The outline base is a plate that follows the contour of the letters, 1.5 to 6 mm wider than the name all round (2.5 mm by default). The letters sit on top of it and stand proud. That gives you two things a door sign needs: one solid part with no loose letters, and a flat back that sits flush against the door.

With a script font like Pacifico, the letters are also joined into one connected piece, so an i dot or the tail of a y can't fall off. The plate gets thicker as you raise the letter thickness (it is 40% of it, at least 2 mm), so a thicker sign also gets a stiffer backing.

It prints flat on its back with no supports. Put the plate in one colour and the letters in another, and the sign reads from across the hallway.

Door sign sizes

Scale the file in your slicer to the width you want. A typical interior door leaf is 70 to 90 cm wide, so these widths look right without taking over the door.

PLA at 0.2 mm on a Bambu Lab A1 mini or similar, thickness 5 mm. The A1 mini fits 180 mm, a P1S or A1 fits 256 mm. A long name at kids' room size may need a diagonal layout.

How to mount a door name sign

A printed door sign weighs 10 to 40 g, so you don't need anything heavy. Pick by the surface and by whether you want it off again later.

Double-sided foam tape

The default for painted doors and smooth wood. Use three or four small squares across the back, press for 30 seconds. It survives a slammed door, but can pull paint when removed.

Removable strips

Picture-hanging or Command-style strips are the pick for rentals and kids' rooms that will change in two years. They come off cleanly if you pull the tab straight down.

Screws

For office doors, outdoors or anywhere people might pick at it. The generator has no screw holes, so drill two 3 mm holes after printing, at low speed, or glue the sign to a wooden board and screw the board.

Glass and metal doors

Clean with isopropyl alcohol first. Clear acrylic foam tape holds well on glass. On steel, glue two small magnets to the back and the sign moves with you.

Kids' room or office: two different signs

Kids' door sign

Go big and playful. Pacifico, Lobster or Baloo 2, bright letters on a white or pastel plate, outline width 4 to 6 mm so the shape reads like a sticker. Siblings sharing a room: put Mia & Leo on one row or each name on its own row.

Office door sign

Go small and quiet. Poppins, Roboto or Oswald, 25 to 35 mm letters, black or dark grey on white. Row one the name, row two the role or room number, such as Dr. Patel and Room 204.

Front door

A family name like The Johnsons in Playfair Display looks classic. Outdoors, print it in PETG or ASA, not PLA. See the house name sign page for materials that survive sun.

Themed rooms

Game room, studio, a teenager's KEEP OUT. Anton or Science Gothic give that stencilled, bold look.

From name to door in one evening

  1. 1

    Type the name

Keep the outline base. Use a second row for a surname, a room number or a sibling.

  2. 2

    Pick font and outline width

Wider outline for kids' rooms, 2 to 3 mm for an office. Script fonts need at least 2.5 mm so the plate covers every stroke.

  3. 3

    Choose colours

Pick the letter colour and the plate colour. The 3MF keeps them on separate filament slots for AMS printers.

  4. 4

    Scale and print

Open the file, scale to the width from the table, print flat at 0.2 mm with no supports. Without an AMS, add a filament change where the letters start.

  5. 5

    Mount it

Clean the door, stick or screw the sign at eye height for the person it's for. For a small child that's about 110 to 120 cm, for adults about 150 cm.

What it can't do

The generator makes text only: no stars, animals or pictures on the sign. If you want a dinosaur next to the name, add a model from Printables or MakerWorld in your slicer and place it on the plate. It also doesn't make a rectangular frame sign. For a round hanging sign, use the circle base from the nursery circle name sign guide, and for more wall ideas see name plaques for kids' nurseries.

Questions people ask

How do I attach a 3D printed door name sign?

Double-sided foam tape for painted doors, removable strips for rentals and kids' rooms, screws for office doors and outdoors. The sign weighs 10 to 40 g, so small pieces are enough. Screw holes aren't built in; drill them after printing.

What size should a kids' door sign be?

About 200 to 280 mm wide with letters 50 to 70 mm tall. That reads from the hallway and still fits a standard interior door. Set the size by scaling in your slicer.

Which font is best for a kids' door sign?

Pacifico, Lobster or Baloo 2. They're round and friendly, and the script fonts are joined into one piece so nothing breaks off. Very thin scripts like Corinthia look delicate but are harder for a child to read.

Can I make an office door sign with name and room number?

Yes. Switch to a block font like Poppins, type the name on row one and click Add text row for the room number. You can have up to 5 rows.

Can I print a door name plate in two colours on one nozzle?

Yes. Print the plate colour, then pause at the layer where the letters begin and swap filament. With an AMS, the 3MF opens in Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer with both colours already assigned.

Is PLA fine for a door sign?

Indoors, yes. On a front door in direct sun, PLA can soften and warp. Use PETG or ASA there.
