The best 3D printed baby gift is one with the name on it that lives on a wall or shelf, not in the cot. New parents get a lot of soft toys. A name sign or a plate with the birth date is the thing they still have out when the child starts school.

Four baby name gifts that work
Each idea uses a different base in the generator. Pick the one that fits where the gift will end up.
Nursery name sign

Circle name sign

Birth-date plate
A standing plate with three rows: the name, the date of birth, and weight and length. It sits on a shelf next to the first photo and is the best christening or baby shower gift if you already know the details.
Stroller or bag tag
A short name on the keychain base, clipped to the changing bag or the stroller frame. Useful at nursery and in a row of identical buggies. Print it in PETG and fix it where small hands can't reach it.

Sizes, print times and filament
Typical values at 0.2 mm layer height on a Bambu Lab A1 mini or a similar printer. Final size is set by scaling in the slicer.

At about $20 per kilo of filament, even the circle sign stays under $1.50 in material. The A1 mini bed is 18 cm, so a 20 cm circle needs a bigger printer.
How to make a birth-date plate
This is the gift people ask about most, and the one with the most details to get right.

Type the name in row 1
Use the first name only. Long double names get small on a 15 cm plate. Great Vibes and Dancing Script read well for a christening, Baloo 2 looks friendly and bold.

Add rows for the date and the numbers
Row 2 gets the date (12.03.2026 or March 12, 2026), row 3 the weight and length (3420 g, 51 cm). You can add up to 5 rows, so there is space for the time of birth or the place too.

Choose the standing base
The plate under the letters lets the name stand on a shelf. If the rows look unbalanced, drag them in the preview until the date sits centred under the name.

Set the letter thickness
3 to 4 mm gives crisp raised letters that don't snap. All rows share one font, and small digits in a thin script can get fragile. If the date looks spidery in the preview, make the plate bigger in the slicer or pick a bolder font like Pacifico or Baloo 2.

Export 3MF for two colours
The 3MF puts letters and plate on separate filament slots. Bambu Studio and OrcaSlicer open it with two colours assigned, so white on sage green prints with no setup on an AMS. Without an AMS, change filament at a layer.
Safety: nothing printed goes in the cot
3D printed objects are not tested as toys. A print can break at a layer line and leave a sharp edge or a small piece. Anything that fits through a toilet paper tube (about 3.2 cm across) is a choking hazard for children under three. A single letter from a name sign fits easily.
So: wall signs go on the wall, beside or above the cot, never directly over a sleeping baby. Shelf plates stay on the shelf. Stroller tags attach to the frame or the bag handle, out of reach from the seat. Don't print teethers, rattles, pacifier clips or anything meant for the mouth, and don't hang a tag with a long cord near the cot.
PLA or PETG for a baby gift?
Both are fine for decoration. The choice depends on where the gift lives.

Neither material is a certified toy material, even if the filament is sold as non-toxic. Glow-in-the-dark filament is popular for nursery signs but wears brass nozzles, so use a hardened nozzle for it.
Ideas by occasion
- Baby shower: the name is often a secret until the birth. Print the family surname as a door sign, or give a card that promises the name sign and print it the week the baby arrives.
- Birth: the birth-date plate, or a circle sign in the nursery colour. Ask the parents for the colour scheme first.
- Christening or naming day: name and date in a script font on a standing plate, white letters on a white or gold plate. Add the church or the date as a second row.
- First birthday: switch to a birthday cake topper with the name and a big 1.

What the generator can't do
It makes names and text, not shapes. There are no stars, moons, clouds or animal outlines, and you can't upload a logo. If you want a name on a bunny silhouette, you need a CAD tool like Tinkercad or a model from a printing platform.
