3D printed teacher gifts
they'll actually keep
The best 3D printed teacher gift is a desk name plate or a plate with every child's name on it. Both print in two to three hours, cost a few dollars in filament and end up on the teacher's desk instead of in a drawer.

What teachers keep
Teachers get a lot of mugs, candles and chocolate. The gifts that stay around are small, useful at school, or carry the names of the class. A printed desk plate is all three if you do it right: it has the teacher's name, it sits on the desk every day, and a version with the kids' names on it reminds them of that one class for years.
Printed gifts also fit school gift rules. Many schools and public employers only allow gifts of low value. A name plate costs under $6 all in, and nobody can mistake it for a bribe.
Teacher gift ideas at a glance
Typical values on a Bambu Lab A1 mini at 0.2 mm layer height. Set the size in the slicer by scaling.
| Gift | Size | Print time | Base mode | Make it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Desk name plate | 150 x 40 mm | about 1.5 to 2 h | standing | Teacher name plate |
| Class-signed plate, 5 rows | 170 x 90 mm | about 2.5 to 3.5 h | standing | Generator below |
| Keychain with name | 60 mm | about 20 min | keychain | Name keychain generator |
| Classroom door sign | 250 mm | about 2 to 3 h | outline | Door name sign |
| Christmas ornament | 70 mm | about 40 min | circle | Name ornament |
| One keychain per child for the teacher's bag | 25 x 50 mm | about 4 h per plate | keychain | Keychains in bulk |
The gift from the whole class: a plate with every name
This is the one teachers talk about. Row 1 is the teacher's name, rows 2 to 5 hold the kids, five to seven names per row. Five rows is the generator's limit, which means about 25 to 30 names. That covers a normal class.
Use a block font. Baloo 2 or Poppins stay readable at 6 mm letter height; a script font turns 28 names into a tangle. Separate names with a space and a dot, like "Mia · Leo · Ava · Noah · Emil". Keep the teacher's name in row 1 and scale the first letter up with the first-letter size control if you want it to stand out.
Width matters more than anything. An A1 mini bed is 180 mm, so keep rows to about 35 characters. For a class of 30 with long names, a 256 mm bed (A1, P1S, X1) gives you room, or split the class across two plates.
Design the class plate
Choose the standing base and a block font like Baloo 2. Row 1: the teacher. Rows 2 to 5: the kids, separated by dots.
How to organise a class gift
- 1
Collect the names
Get the class list from the class rep or the parent group chat. Check spellings twice; a misspelled name on a class plate is the one thing parents notice.
- 2
Lay out the rows
Put names in alphabetical order or by seating, and balance the row lengths. Aim for rows within 5 characters of each other so the plate looks even.
- 3
Check it in 3D
Rotate the preview and zoom in on small letters. If an i-dot or e looks tiny, make the plate bigger or use fewer names per row.
- 4
Export and print
Export a 3MF for two colours: white letters on a dark plate reads well from across the room. Print flat, no supports, 0.2 mm layers. 0.12 mm layers make small letters cleaner but double the time.
- 5
Hand it over
Wrap it with a card signed by the kids. The plate carries the names, the card carries the messages.
Ideas by occasion
Teacher Appreciation Week
In the US it is the first full week of May. A keychain with the teacher's name is small enough for every family to bring one without it looking competitive.
Christmas
A name ornament in gold silk PLA. It is small, cheap and goes on their own tree. Make one for the teaching assistant too.
End of the school year
The class-signed plate. Add the year to row 1: "Ms Novak · 3B · 2026". It becomes the souvenir of that year's class.
A teacher leaving or retiring
A door sign for their home office or garden shed, in a script font this time. It is personal and not school-related, which is the point.
Budget, per child
What each option costs. Filament at about $20 per kg.
| Option | File | Filament | Per child in a class of 25 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class-signed plate | $4.99 single download | about $0.80 (40 g) | about $0.25 |
| Desk name plate | $4.99 single download | about $0.60 (30 g) | about $0.25 |
| One keychain per child | $9.99, one month Unlimited with bulk export | about $2 (100 g) | about $0.50 |
| All of the above | $9.99, one month Unlimited | about $3.50 | about $0.55 |

When a printed gift is the wrong choice
Don't print food containers or mugs as a teacher gift. FDM prints have tiny gaps between layers where bacteria sit, and PLA softens in a dishwasher. A printed name tag on a bought mug is fine.
If the class wants to give something bigger, like a gift card or flowers, a printed plate is a nice extra rather than the main gift. And if you have no printer, allow a week for a print service: how to get 3D printed names without a printer.
Tips that make the difference
- Use the name the kids use: "Frau Weber" or "Ms Novak", not the first name.
- Two colours beat one. The 3MF export puts letters and plate on separate filament slots, so an AMS prints them without setup.
- Matte filament hides layer lines and looks better in the classroom photo than glossy PLA.
- Print one extra. Letters are small on a class plate, and the file is yours, so a spare copy costs filament and time, not a second download.
- Let the kids help. Designing a plate is a good first project; see the classroom first project guide.
Questions people ask
What is a good 3D printed teacher gift?
A desk name plate with the teacher's name, or a plate with the names of the whole class. Both print in two to three hours and cost a few dollars. For smaller budgets, a keychain or a Christmas ornament with the teacher's name prints in under an hour.
How many names fit on a class-signed plate?
The generator takes up to 5 rows. With the teacher in row 1 and five to seven names per remaining row, you fit about 25 to 30 names. Use a block font like Baloo 2 and keep the plate at least 170 mm wide.
How much does a 3D printed class gift cost?
A single download is $4.99 and the filament for a plate costs about 80 cents. Split across a class of 25, that is about 25 cents per child. Designing and previewing is free.
What is a good end-of-year teacher gift from the whole class?
The class-signed plate with the teacher's name, the class and the year in row 1 and the kids' names below. It is the gift teachers keep, because it reminds them of that specific class.
Can I make a teacher gift without a 3D printer?
Yes. Design it here, download the file and send it to a print service or a library makerspace. Allow about a week before the last day of school.
Can students design the teacher gift themselves?
Yes, the editor runs in the browser with no account or install. Kids from about age 8 can type the names and pick a font; an adult handles the download and the printer.
