3D printed birthday cake topper
Name, age, one piece

Type the name, add the age or Happy Birthday on a second row, and export a topper with a prong that goes straight into the cake. For a 20 cm (8 inch) cake, scale it to about 140 mm wide and print it in around 45 minutes.

Prong Only adds a stake under the name. Pacifico joins the letters into one piece, so nothing falls off in the frosting.

How the birthday topper works

The generator above starts in Prong Only mode with Pacifico. You get the name as one connected piece and a tapered stake under it, flat on the back so it prints lying down with no supports. Add a second text row for the age or a greeting, check it in 3D and export an STL or 3MF.

This page is about birthdays only: layouts with name and age, sizes per cake and the food question parents ask most. For the basics of both topper modes and other occasions, see the custom cake topper guide. Weddings have their own page on wedding cake toppers.

Designing is free and needs no account. You pay when you download: $4.99 for one topper, or Unlimited if you make toppers for every birthday in the family or sell them.

Four layouts that work for birthdays

The editor takes up to 5 rows. For a cake, one or two rows is the sweet spot. Each row has its own switch for the base, so you choose which row gets the prong.

Name only

"Emma" in Pacifico or Lobster. The simplest topper and the strongest, because the script name is already one piece with a single prong in the middle.

Name over age

"Emma" on row one, "7" on row two. Give only the bottom row a prong and drag the rows until they overlap by 2 to 3 mm, so the slicer prints them as one part.

Happy Birthday over name

Put "Happy" and "Birthday" on their own rows, or use the Cake Topper mode with its base bar. In Prong Only mode, words separated by a space stay separate parts.

Big number

A single "5" or "60" as the whole topper. One digit works in Prong Only. Two digits in a block font like Anton or Baloo 2 need the Cake Topper mode, because block letters aren't joined on their own.

Topper size by cake diameter

Aim for a topper about two thirds as wide as the cake. Typical values for PLA at 0.2 mm on an A1 mini, name plus age, 3 to 4 mm thick.

CakeTopper widthName letter heightProng in the cakePrint time and filament
15 cm (6 inch)100 to 120 mm30 to 40 mmabout 30 mmabout 30 min, 6 g
20 cm (8 inch)130 to 160 mm40 to 50 mm35 to 40 mmabout 45 min, 10 g
26 cm (10 inch)170 to 200 mm50 to 60 mm40 to 50 mmabout 1 h 15 min, 15 g

Toppers over 170 mm wide don't fit flat on the 180 mm A1 mini bed. Rotate them diagonally or print on a 256 mm bed like the A1 or P1S. On a tiered cake, size the topper to the top tier.

Getting the prong length right

The prong is part of the model, so it scales with everything else. That is the one thing people get wrong.

  1. 1

    Scale the width first

In the slicer, scale the topper until it has the width from the table. Keep uniform scaling on for this step.

  2. 2

    Measure the prong

Check the prong length after scaling. You want 30 to 50 mm, depending on the cake. A long name scaled down to a small width ends up with a short prong, so check it every time.

  3. 3

    Fix the thickness

Turn uniform scaling off and set the thickness (Z) to 3 to 4 mm. Thicker toppers are heavier and lean forward in soft frosting.

  4. 4

    Print flat on the back

The back of the letters and the prong is flat, so it lies on the bed with no supports. 3 walls and 15 to 20% infill make the prong stiff enough for a firm buttercream.

  5. 5

    Test in the cake

Push it in straight and slowly, a few centimetres from the back edge so it leans against nothing. On a soft sponge, go deeper. On fondant, pre-poke a hole with a skewer.

Are 3D printed cake toppers food safe?

Not by default. The layer lines of any FDM print trap crumbs and moisture and can't be cleaned properly, most filaments carry no food-contact certificate, and a brass nozzle can leave traces of metal in the plastic. PLA and PETG are both fine for decoration, but neither makes a printed part food safe on its own.

The fix is simple: keep a barrier between plastic and cake. Wrap the prong tightly in cling film or food-grade foil, or slide a paper or plastic drinking straw over it and cut it to length. Put the topper on just before the candles, take it out before you cut, and don't let the letters touch the frosting. Many bakers also push the prong into a small disc of fondant or chocolate first, which hides the wrap as well.

Birthday topper tips

  • Silk gold or silver PLA looks the most like a bought topper. Glitter PLA works well for kids' birthdays.
  • Rounded fonts like Pacifico, Lobster and Baloo 2 survive the party better than thin scripts such as Great Vibes. See fonts that print cleanly.
  • Print two. One goes on the cake, the spare saves you when a guest drops the first in the frosting.
  • Keep it: most toppers become a keepsake, so the kid's name and the age are worth keeping on a shelf afterwards. A birthday name gift in the same font makes a set.
  • No printer? Send the file to a print service. The guide on getting custom names printed lists your options.

Questions people ask

Are 3D printed cake toppers safe?

They are safe as decoration if the plastic doesn't touch the cake directly. Wrap the prong in cling film or slide a straw over it, and take the topper out before cutting. Printed parts are not food safe by default, whatever the filament.

Is PLA or PETG better for a cake topper?

Both work. PLA is easier to print and comes in more colours, including silk gold. PETG is tougher and handles a warm room better. Neither makes the print food safe on its own, so use a barrier either way.

How do I make a name and age cake topper?

Type the name in row one and the age in row two. Give only the bottom row a prong, then drag the rows so they overlap slightly and print as one part. Scale it to about two thirds of the cake width.

Can I make a Happy Birthday cake topper?

Yes. Put Happy and Birthday on separate rows, or use the Cake Topper mode with a base bar so both words are held together. In Prong Only mode, words separated by a space would print as loose parts.

How big should a birthday cake topper be?

About 100 to 120 mm wide for a 15 cm cake, 130 to 160 mm for 20 cm and 170 to 200 mm for 26 cm. The prong should reach 30 to 50 mm into the cake.

How long does a cake topper take to print?

Around 30 minutes for a small topper and 45 minutes to an hour for a standard 20 cm cake, on an A1 mini at 0.2 mm. You can design it the evening before and still have it done by breakfast.
