3D printed wedding cake topper
with both your names
A custom wedding cake topper you 3D print yourself is both first names joined by an "&" in one connected cursive piece, on a prong that goes into the top tier. Type your names below, see it in 3D, and print it in under an hour in gold silk PLA.

Type the names without spaces around the & so the whole line fuses into one piece.
A names cake topper in one connected piece
The topper preset here uses Great Vibes and the Prong Only base: no plate, just the letters and a spike underneath. Script names are joined into one connected piece, so the loops of "Anna" and "Ben" print as a single solid instead of loose letters that snap off when you push the prong into the cake.
One detail matters: spaces stay spaces. The generator closes the gaps between letters but leaves word gaps open, so "Anna & Ben" with spaces would come out as three parts with the prong under the "&" only. Type "Anna&Ben" and the whole line fuses. If you prefer visible spaces, switch to the Cake Topper base, where a thin plate under the letters holds the words together. Check the 3D preview either way; it shows what you'll print.
Topper size by tier diameter
A topper looks right when it spans about 80 to 100% of the top tier. Wider looks like a sign stuck in a cake, narrower gets lost behind the flowers. You set the size by scaling the model in the slicer.
| Top tier | Topper width | Print time | Filament |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 cm (4 in) | 80 to 100 mm | about 30 min | about 5 g |
| 15 cm (6 in) | 120 to 140 mm | about 45 min | about 8 to 10 g |
| 20 cm (8 in) | 150 to 180 mm | about 1 h | about 12 to 15 g |
| 25 cm (10 in) | 180 to 220 mm | about 1.5 h | about 15 to 20 g |
Typical values at 0.2 mm layers and 3 mm thickness on a Bambu Lab A1 mini. Its 180 mm bed limits the widest size; print diagonally or use a larger printer for 200 mm and up.
What to write on it
Both first names
"Anna&Ben" is the most personal and the most photographed. Put the shorter name first if the capitals collide; the & needs a little room.
Mr & Mrs
Type "Mr&Mrs", or "Mr&Mr" and "Mrs&Mrs". Short and readable from the back of the room. It also works for a friend's wedding when you don't want to spell a name wrong.
Your new surname
"The Millers" or just "Miller" in script. A surname with a space needs the Cake Topper base with its plate, or no space at all.
Names and date
A date as a second row makes the topper tall and top-heavy. Put the date on the favours from the wedding print plan or on the table names, and keep the topper to one line.
Colour and material
| Filament | Look | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gold silk PLA | Metallic, warm | The wedding standard. The gloss hides layer lines and reads as metal in photos. |
| Silver silk PLA | Metallic, cool | Suits white and blue colour schemes and silver cutlery. |
| Rose gold or copper silk | Soft metallic | Matches blush flowers. Shades vary a lot between brands, so order a sample. |
| Matte white | Clean, modern | Looks like porcelain on a white cake, but disappears against white fondant. Use it on a naked or dark cake. |
| Matte black | Graphic | Strong contrast on a white cake. Shows every fingerprint. |
Silk PLA is a little more brittle than plain PLA. Print the topper at 3 mm thickness or more so the thin script strokes don't break when you handle it.
Food safety: put a barrier between print and cake
Treat a 3D printed topper as decoration, not as food-safe. PLA as a raw material is used for food packaging, but a printed part has layer lines that trap crumbs and bacteria, silk filaments contain additives, and a brass nozzle can leave traces of lead. None of that is a big risk for a few hours in a cake, but you shouldn't skip the barrier.
Wrap the prong in cling film, or slide it into a paper or plastic drinking straw cut to length. Put the topper on just before the cake goes out, take it off before cutting, and don't serve the slice it touched to small children. The custom cake topper guide has more on materials.
From names to cake in five steps
- 1
Type the names
Without spaces around the &. Try the capitals in two or three script fonts; Corinthia is finer, Pacifico bolder than Great Vibes.
- 2
Set the thickness
3 to 4 mm. Thinner saves filament but makes the topper wobbly; thicker looks heavy from the side.
- 3
Place the prong
The prong sits under the middle of the line. Drag it in the preview if the centre falls between two letters.
- 4
Export and scale
Scale to the width from the size table. The back is flat, so the topper prints lying down on the bed, no supports needed.
- 5
Test in the kitchen
Push the wrapped prong into a piece of cake or a firm sponge before the wedding. If it leans, add a skewer behind it.
Limits worth knowing
The prong scales with the topper. For "Anna&Ben" at 150 mm wide it comes out about 2 cm long, which holds in fondant and firm buttercream. In soft cream, or for a topper wider than 180 mm, tape a wooden skewer to the back of the prong for depth.
A 3D printed topper has visible layer lines up close. If you want a mirror finish or a very fine calligraphy line, a laser-cut acrylic topper from a bakery supplier looks sharper. For a birthday instead, see the birthday cake topper with name and age.
Questions people ask
Is a 3D printed wedding cake topper food safe?
Not on its own. Wrap the prong in cling film or slide it into a drinking straw so no printed plastic touches the cake, and take the topper off before cutting. Printed parts have layer lines that trap bacteria, and silk filaments contain additives.
How big should a wedding cake topper be?
About 80 to 100% of the top tier diameter. That is 120 to 140 mm for a 15 cm top tier and 150 to 180 mm for a 20 cm tier. Scale the model in the slicer to that width.
Can I make a Mr & Mrs cake topper?
Yes. Type "Mr&Mrs" without spaces so the line fuses into one piece, or use the Cake Topper base if you want spaces. "Mr&Mr" and "Mrs&Mrs" work the same way.
How long does it take to print a names cake topper?
About 45 minutes to an hour for a 120 to 160 mm topper on a Bambu Lab A1 mini. Print two: one for the cake and a spare, in case one breaks on the way to the venue.
What colour filament looks best on a wedding cake?
Gold silk PLA is the usual choice, because it looks metallic and hides layer lines. Silver silk suits cool colour schemes. Avoid white on a white fondant cake, it disappears.
Can I order a custom topper without a 3D printer?
Yes. Design it here, download the file and send it to a print service. See how to get custom 3D printed names. Designing is free; you pay for the download.
