3D printed initial keychain
one letter, done right
Type one letter or two or three initials below and you get a keychain with a backing plate and a ring hole, ready to print. It starts in Anton, a heavy block font that stays readable at 25 mm. Switch to a script or serif font for a monogram.

Keychain mode and Anton are preset. Try 2 or 3 initials, and use the first-letter size slider for a monogram.
Why initials work so well on a keychain
A full name makes a long, thin keychain. A single letter makes a compact, almost square tag that sits flat in a pocket and reads from across a room. Initials also skip the problem of long names, and they work as gifts when you're not sure how someone spells their name.
The generator above builds the plate around whatever you type and adds the ring hole on the left edge, so one letter and three letters both come out as one solid piece. If you want a full name instead, the name keychain generator is the same tool with a longer name preset.
Which layout to pick
Typical finished sizes after scaling in the slicer. The plate adds about 3 mm of padding around the letters.
| Layout | Example | Typical size | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single letter | M | 25-35 mm tall | Kids, bag tags, an alphabet set |
| Two initials | JK | 40-50 mm wide | Couples, key sets for two |
| Three initials | EML | 50-60 mm wide | Classic monogram, gifts for adults |
| Initial plus name | Anna, big A | 55-70 mm wide | Names with a decorative first letter |
| Initials plus year | JK over 2026 | 40-50 mm wide, two rows | Weddings, graduation, anniversaries |
The generator takes up to 5 rows of text, so a year or a date can go on a second row.
Make an initial keychain
- 1
1. Type the letter or initials
One letter, or two or three without spaces. Upper case reads best on a small tag. For a couple, try an ampersand between the letters, like J&K.
- 2
2. Pick a font
Anton is preset because it's bold and survives being small. The table further down lists the other fonts that work for initials.
- 3
3. Set the first-letter size
The first letter can be scaled from 0.5x to 2x the rest. At 1.4x to 1.6x you get a monogram look with a dominant initial. Leave it at 1x for a single letter, where it changes nothing.
- 4
4. Check thickness and hole
5 mm of letter thickness is a good floor for something that lives on a key ring. The ring hole is adjustable from 8 to 60% of the tag height; a single tall letter needs less, a short two-letter tag a bit more.
- 5
5. Download and print flat
Export STL or 3MF and lay it flat on the bed. At 0.2 mm layers a single-letter tag takes about 15 to 25 minutes and 4 to 8 g of PLA on a printer like the A1 mini.
Font picks for initials
Initials are short, so you can use fonts that would be too wide or too fancy for a full name.
Anton
Tall, heavy block letters. The safest choice for a single letter at 25 mm, and the one kids can read on their own bag.
Playfair Display
A high-contrast serif that looks like a classic monogram. Keep the tag at 30 mm or more so the thin strokes stay above 1 mm.
Great Vibes and Pacifico
Script initials with flourishes. The generator joins script letters into one piece, so J&K in Great Vibes prints as one body. Our cursive keychain page covers scripts in more depth.
Baloo 2
Round and friendly. Good for children's initials and for backpack name tags that get thrown around.
Science Gothic
Wide and technical. Looks sharp as two initials on a car or bike key.
JetBrains Mono
A monospaced font, so every letter is the same width. Handy if you print a matching set and want the tags to line up.
Printing a full alphabet set
Alphabet keychains sell well at markets and make good party favours: everyone picks their letter. With a single download you'd need 26 files, which adds up. With Unlimited you can paste A to Z into the bulk tool, one letter per line, and get all 26 files in one ZIP with the same font and settings. The bulk keychain page explains the plate layout, and Unlimited also covers selling the prints.
Single letters are small, so 16 to 20 fit on a 180 x 180 mm bed with 5 mm gaps. That's one plate of roughly 4 to 6 hours and 80 to 140 g of filament. If you plan to sell them, the keychain price calculator works out cost per piece.
What the generator can't do for monograms
The traditional three-letter monogram puts the surname initial in the middle, larger than the other two. The generator only scales the first letter, so it can't make the middle one bigger. You can put the big letter first (surname initial, then first and middle), or keep all three the same size.
The ring hole also comes with the backing plate. A bare letter with a hole drilled straight through it isn't an option here. If you want that, drill a 5 mm hole into a thick letter after printing, or model it in a CAD tool like Tinkercad.
Tips for small letters
- Scale the whole tag, not just the height. Squashed letters look wrong and the strokes get thin.
- Two colours help small letters read. The 3MF export puts letters and plate on separate filament slots, and without an AMS you can change filament at the right layer.
- PETG survives a pocket better than PLA and doesn't get brittle in a hot car.
- Print a spare. At 5 g each, a second copy costs almost nothing and the first one always goes missing.
Questions people ask
How do I make a 3D printed initial keychain?
Type one letter or your initials into the generator on this page, which is already set to keychain mode. Pick a font, check the thickness and download the STL or 3MF. It prints flat in about 15 to 25 minutes, with the ring hole already built in.
Can I make a monogram keychain?
Yes. Type two or three initials and scale the first letter up to 2x the others. Script fonts like Great Vibes or a serif like Playfair Display give the classic look. The generator can't enlarge only the middle letter, so the traditional centre-large monogram needs the big letter first.
What size should a letter keychain be?
25 to 35 mm tall for a single letter, and 40 to 60 mm wide for two or three initials. Letter thickness of about 5 mm keeps it stiff on a key ring. You set the final size by scaling in your slicer.
Can I get a whole alphabet keychain set?
With Unlimited you paste A to Z into the bulk tool and download 26 files as one ZIP, all with the same font and settings. 16 to 20 single letters fit on a 180 x 180 mm bed, so the set is roughly two plates on a small printer.
Which font is best for a letter keychain?
Anton for a bold single letter that reads at a distance, Playfair Display for a classic serif monogram, and Great Vibes or Pacifico for script initials. Keep thin fonts at 30 mm or larger so the strokes print.
Can I sell initial keychains made with this?
A single download is for personal use. Unlimited includes commercial use, so you can sell the prints, for example as an alphabet set at a craft market.
